If youโre a realtor, seller, or buyer always check the town website or call the town to check on any open building permits!
When selling a home recently, we noticed the home had some open building permits that the seller wasnโt aware of! Turns out, construction was done prior to everything shutting down for the Covid-19 pandemic. Once the time came to inspect, it never got done due to everything being shut down. We had to jump through hoops in order to get this done and ultimately it delayed closing by a week as we had to wait on the town to squeeze us in.
As a homeowner, if youโve recently done work on your home, try to remember to stay on top of your contractor, architect, and the building inspector to make sure these get done before you put your home up for sale.
As a realtor, always ask sellers about construction, and look into it to make sure there are no open permits. These can often take a lot of time and money to complete, so check with the town asap.
As a buyer, always ask about these things! You do not want to buy or move into a home that has open permits. This means it has not been approved for final inspection by the town/city and the work could be done improperly and be unsafe.
