The Decision: from Classroom to Real Estate

Leaving the profession of teaching was a huge leap for me! I put so much time, effort,  and money into getting my BS, MS, and other certifications that I didnโ€™t want them to go to โ€œwasteโ€! I did love winter, spring, and summer breaks, who wouldnโ€™t? But has anyone ever tried to travel during those times? Almost impossible on a teacherโ€™s salary.

Then thereโ€™s the pension…aka golden handcuffs for educators. I stayed in the field longer than I wanted because I did not want to walk away from the pension.

Needing time off for medical care was never easy, it was like a double edged sword. You could take the time to recover but youโ€™d hate to use it if you were trying to save days for protection from flu/cold season or for a future maternity leave. Not to mention how uncomfortable it was explaining to the administration why youโ€™re out sick. Who wants to share that they have <insert embarrassing ailment/medical reason> when your boss calls and asks โ€œHow sick ARE you, can you come in later?โ€

During the pandemic I was so burnt out I decided Iโ€™d had enough. I put myself first and left my job as a special educator. I needed more flexibility in my schedule for my mental health and well being and I knew I was no longer in the right place. I always felt so tied down as a teacher.

I still love kids, I love seeing them grow and succeed. I love helping families and advocating for them; It was just time for me to do it in a different way. A career that allows for a little more flexibility in my schedule and a greater potential for financial growth. I wanted to tap into another passion Iโ€™ve had since childhood. Iโ€™ve always had an interest in home architecture, design, and dรฉcor. So that was it, I signed up for the Real Estate course, got my license and joined Lamacchia Realty!

So far I am loving it and I am so happy I took the risk. I am currently in the process of my first sell/buy transaction and itโ€™s actually for myself and my partner. What better way to learn than on yourself! You can check out the home we are selling here!

Our new home we are buying needs a lot of work but we are thrilled!

Stay tuned for upcoming entries about the process of each side, the roadblocks Iโ€™ve encountered, the good, the bad, and the ugly! Whether itโ€™s your first, second, or tenth career, every journey is different. Iโ€™m hoping my journey can be helpful to someone selling, buying, or just entering the business!
